Mélanie Matranga

Mélanie Matranga was born in 1985 in Marseille and cur­rently lives and works in Paris. She has had numerous solo exhi­bi­tions, most recently at the Palais de Tokyo (Paris, 2015) and Independenza Studio (Rome, 2016). Mélanie Matranga was the inau­gural winner of the Frieze Artist Award for which she directed « From A to Be through E », a mini-series of 3 episodes to be broad­casted online. The series was selected for the Munich Kino der Kunst fes­tival in 2015. In 2014 and 2016, she was amongst the artists selected for the Ricard Corporate Foundation Award, she was also short­listed for the AWARE Women Artists Award in 2018. She’s rep­re­sented by High Art Gallery in Paris and Karma International Gallery in Zurich.

Mélanie Matranga’s work revolves around mul­tiple prac­tices such as transfer, drawing, video, instal­la­tion, ready-made and molding. Often rec­og­nized for her envi­ron­ments or instal­la­tions, Mélanie Matranga cre­ates spaces where it becomes pos­sible to be alone whilst sur­rounded by others. These envi­ron­ments are as much spaces for life as spaces for reflexion that invite vis­i­tors to come into con­tact with her works. By immersing us into a prac­tice where every­thing clashes, the artist cre­ates spaces for com­mu­ni­ca­tion between bodies and words. In making the exhi­bi­tion space a place of inti­macy - espe­cially through per­sonal repro­duc­tions of everyday ele­ments - Mélanie Matranga, breaks tra­di­tional sys­tems of rep­re­sen­ta­tion, guides us towards a state of relax­ation and ques­tions our mech­a­nisms of iden­tity con­struc­tion.
